Richest One Percent
Win Rat-Race
Who wins the rat race? Why, the richest one percent of all Americans, of
course, represented here by Jane Simonsen. An event at the May Day rally sponsored by the
Iowa City Federation of Labor and UE Local 896-COGS, the race was intended to remind
viewers that the richest 1 percent of Americans have seen their income almost double in
the past 20 years. Other runners — representing the bottom 60 percent whose income
has stagnated or fallen — began stumbling, staggering and falling not far from the
starting line. Makes you think that the race is rigged!
